Onto the current LTS with an AI-assisted upgrade server – fast, tested and affordable.

TYPO3 upgrade: fast, tested and affordable onto the current LTS

With our own in-house, AI-assisted upgrade server we bring your website onto the current TYPO3 LTS – considerably faster, in a more structured way and at a fraction of what a traditional agency charges.

You do not just get a technical update. You get a tested, future-proof website – with far less effort, risk and waiting time. Every upgrade includes:

  • a security audit before and after the upgrade – before the start you see where the existing installation is vulnerable, before go-live it is on record that the upgraded website is clean,
  • automated routines for recurring upgrade steps – reproducible and without slips instead of by hand,
  • automated functional tests after the upgrade – so that content, forms, extensions and key workflows keep working flawlessly.

Where the work really is

The core itself can almost always be updated. The work sits in the extensions: in the one that has had no release for six years, in the one somebody adapted "just quickly" back then, and in the third whose functionality the core now provides itself. Because the upgrade server takes over the routine, the time goes exactly into those places.

How it runs

  1. Audit. A security audit of the existing installation and a check of every installed extension: maintained and compatible, replaceable by an alternative, superseded by core functionality, or to be rebuilt. You get a list with the effort per item and a recommendation.
  2. Test instance. The upgrade runs first on a copy of the database and the files. You see and operate the result before anything goes into production.
  3. Upgrade. The AI-assisted upgrade server handles the recurring steps automatically. Custom extensions are brought up to date with Rector and hand work – including the PHP version, TCA adjustments, Fluid syntax and replacing core APIs that have been removed.
  4. Content. Database migrations, slug generation, FAL references and language relations are checked, not merely executed. This is where the errors arise that only surface weeks later.
  5. Tests. Automated functional tests check content, forms, extensions and key workflows, and the second security audit confirms the result. Then you check the test instance with your editors.
  6. Go-live. In a planned window, with a checklist and a fallback plan. The old installation stays untouched until you sign off.

Why an upgrade is cheaper now than later

Older TYPO3 versions no longer receive security updates. That is the obvious argument. The more expensive one is different: every LTS step skipped increases the distance disproportionately. Between two consecutive LTS versions the changes are manageable; across three steps, removed APIs, changed database structures and extensions that no longer exist all add up.

Then there is the PHP side: at some point the hosting provider switches off the old PHP version, and a project you could have planned becomes an emergency with a price tag to match.

From which version?

We have handled upgrades from TYPO3 6.2 onwards. Realistically, below version 8 it is often more sensible to rebuild the sitepackage and migrate the content – the template architecture has changed so much since then that porting costs more than rebuilding. We say that in the audit too, not first in the invoice.

Questions about the TYPO3 upgrade

Does the website stay available during the upgrade?

Yes. The work happens on a copy; the production installation carries on unchanged. The switch comes at the very end, in a window agreed with you — usually outside office hours and in under an hour.

Do we lose content or URLs?

No. Content is migrated, not re-entered. Where a URL changes — because slug generation works differently from the old RealURL configuration, for instance — we set up a permanent redirect. You get the complete old-to-new list before go-live.

What happens to extensions that no longer exist?

For each extension we show three routes: replace it with a maintained alternative, drop it in favour of core functionality that now exists, or rebuild it as a lean extension of your own. Each route comes with an estimate. You decide, we implement.

Can we do the upgrade in stages?

Not the upgrade itself — a half-migrated installation is an unstable state. What does separate well: first the pure version upgrade with the appearance unchanged, then the content and design improvements at your leisure. That keeps the risk per step small and makes faults easy to attribute.

How does a TYPO3 upgrade run without the website going down for long?

The upgrade runs first on a test instance kept separate from the live system, with a copy of the database and the files. After the audit of TYPO3 version, PHP, extensions, custom code and interfaces, the code, the Composer dependencies and the database are updated on the test instance.

Then we check frontend and backend, navigation, login, forms, media, search, cron jobs, external interfaces as well as redirects and other important SEO functions. Before go-live we take a full backup and agree on the sign-off and a fallback plan.

The production website stays available unchanged throughout. Only after sign-off does the planned switch-over follow, in an agreed window, usually outside office hours and in under an hour. If problems arise, we can switch back to the previous installation.

Why is a TYPO3 upgrade at WEB NOMADS cheaper than at a traditional agency?

Because we do not do the recurring upgrade steps by hand. Our own in-house, AI-assisted upgrade server automates them – which makes the upgrade considerably faster, more structured and a fraction of the cost at a traditional agency.

The time saved goes where an upgrade is decided: custom extensions, the content migration and the sign-off with you. Throughout, you talk directly to the developer, with no project manager in between.

What is an AI-assisted TYPO3 upgrade server?

An in-house environment of our own on which we carry out TYPO3 upgrades. It automates the steps that repeat in every upgrade and checks the result with a security audit and automated functional tests.

The AI does not replace an expert: every change runs on a test instance first, is reviewed by us and only goes live once you sign off.

Is a security audit part of the TYPO3 upgrade?

Yes, in every upgrade – once before and once after. The first shows where the existing installation is vulnerable, for instance through outdated extensions, a PHP version that is no longer supported or open TYPO3 security advisories.

The second confirms before go-live that the upgraded website is clean. You receive both results in writing.

How do you check after the TYPO3 upgrade that everything works?

With automated functional tests: content, forms, extensions and key workflows are run through automatically after the upgrade. Whatever no longer works as before shows up on the test instance – not with your visitors.

Then you check the result with your editors. The switch-over only happens once you sign off.
